I’m Addled and this is my blog about having ADD while working in academia.
I have a Ph.D. in psychology (not counseling or clinical!), and I currently am working as an assistant professor at a large research university on the eastern seaboard. I’m not a native east coaster; I’m actually from the midwest, and spent my graduate school years in the great plains.
I wasn’t diagnosed with ADD until after finishing my Ph.D. My old doc says that I’m rather high-functioning, and that I might not have ever been diagnosed if I hadn’t chosen to be an academic.
Feel free to contact me directly using the form below, but please note that I do not respond to messages asking for diagnostic advice (e.g., “Here are all my problems… do I have ADD/ADHD?”). I’m not an MD; if you think you might have ADD/ADHD, you should talk to a medical professional, not an anonymous blogger! Finally, I have a short attention span and a very busy schedule; if you send me a lengthy message, I can’t guarantee I’ll reply because I might not be able to make it through the full message…
Have a nice day !
First, thanks for this blog!
Second, any ideas on how an ADHD grad student in the humanities, studying for phd comps, might actually get through all this reading and still pass exams? I am seriously struggling and very much fear that I won’t pass. And i’ve already put them off a semester, so that’s not an ideal option to try again.
