last entry of 2007!

I have less than 36 hours left of my holiday “vacation” and hope that they will actually be vacation-like. The last 10 days of it haven’t been remotely restful. Over a span of 4 days, I:

  1. Packed my bags, the cats, and the car
  2. Took hubby to the airport
  3. Drove 5+ hours to my hometown
  4. Helped my mom finish the holiday cookies, wrapped presents, decorated the tree, was dragged to multiple social functions
  5. Put up with my socially-unskilled cousin for 2 days while he grumbled about the state of the economy, a series of stupid decisions made by his father, etc.
  6. Had xmas eve dinner at my dad’s house with my brothers, their girlfriends, grumpy cousin, and dad
  7. Helped prepare, serve, & clean up xmas brunch & dinner
  8. Put up with my grandmother’s temper tantrum about something really, really dumb
  9. Repacked the car & cats
  10. Drove 5+ hours back to my current city, picking up hubby at the airport on the way

Then I spent 2 days cleaning the house in preparation for company, who were with us from Friday to Sunday afternoon.

Superimpose this schedule with:

  1. a new computer requiring copious data transfers from our old computer (I should be rejoicing, but we can’t seem to find any of our driver cds…)
  2. an exhausted hubby who wants to spend all of his free time playing games on the new computer while I cook, clean, and try to find the aforementioned driver cds
  3. my cell phone beeping in the background, telling me that it needs charging. Unfortunately the charger disappeared somewhere between here and my hometown
  4. My having to book a flight for interview #4, which has been a nightmare to schedule.

The thought of going back to work on Wednesday is enough to make me cry.

Thank goodness 2007 is over. Things can only look up in 2008, right?

follow-up on interview #1

December 20, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I am running a week behind at work at the moment entirely because of our burglary & interview #1.

Random thoughts about the burglary. I finished the itemized list for the insurance & police a day ago. I was flabbergasted to learn that the total estimated replacement value for the stolen items is $8000. Ouch. I’ve been playing phone tag with the burglary detective assigned to my case for the last 24 hours. It’s wishful thinking, but it would be great if they had a lead. One of my work colleagues believes it might be one of a string of robberies in our orthodox Jewish neighborhood, as it occurred shortly after sundown on the 1st night of Hanukkah (i.e., the time at which most of our Lubavitch neighbors were at their synogogues).

Interview #1 recap. It went as well as it could have gone considering the recent circumstances. At least I wasn’t nervous about doing my job talk in comparison to all the stress of the prior week! The school, faculty, and students were all great, but I don’t think the fit will be right for me. The research standards for tenure are pretty low (i.e., as many publications in 4 years as I’ve been churning out in 1 year of postdoc), which means that the expectations for teaching are very high. I like to teach, but it’s not the end-all, be-all for me. I suspect that this combination would eventually get boring, which is bad news for anybody with ADD in any line of work. Furthermore, I didn’t really like the geographic area very much. Nearly all of the faculty commute in from elsewhere (30+ minutes each way is normal), and the housing prices and taxes are quite high in this general area. I suspect that I will not get an offer, and that’s okay.

Preview of Interviews #2-4. Three more interviews are on my schedule for January. One is at the mid-sized Ph.D.-granting institution on the east coast. The two others are in the same state in the midwest; one is in a Ph.D.-granting program, and the other is in a masters-granting program. Both are within an hour’s drive of a suitable airport for Hubby’s job, and we’d be as close to my hometown as we are in our current city. Housing prices are very reasonable, and our quality of life would be higher than it is now.

But… I can’t think about all this right now, or my head will explode.

things didn’t exactly turn out as I’d planned

December 9, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Things never really go as we plan, do they? Last Wednesday night I was supposed to be on a plane to my interview at the small liberal arts college. My flight was cancelled around the time it was scheduled to depart because of weather.  I arrived home at 6.15 only to find out that our house had been robbed during my absence.

They left the front door wide open but with the living room lights off. I cannot express in words how creepy it was to see this when I pulled up & parked in front of our house. I ran inside to see if they were still there. Spooky came right out and started crying at me. Anyone who knows my cat will recognize that this is a sign they were no longer there (she is terrified of strangers, but particularly noisy ones). I don’t think they’d been gone long, however, because the house wasn’t that cold yet. I called 911, and the police arrived about 10 minutes later. In the meantime, I called my mom, who called my landlady and Emily, my college friend who lives 5 minutes away.

They took our new tv, Hubby’s PS3, his newest PS3 game, the contents of my jewelry box and earring box, our cable remote control, the HD cables for the PS3 and tv, and a package from amazon.com that was sitting on the front step (I’d list the contents, but then my brothers would know what they’re getting for Christmas). Total value of items =  $4000.

The police officer and I walked through the house, and as far as we can tell, they tried to come in the back door but couldn’t open it successfully. They’d bashed in a small window in the door, and had managed to unlock the door lock but not the deadbolt (thank goodness for that sticky, annoying deadbolt). So, they jimmied open the window of our bedroom instead (both the door and our bedroom window open up to our back porch), taking off the screen and knocking down our cats’ windowsill purch. At that point, they took one our blue pillowcases (wedding present, of course) and grabbed the jewelry. They opened our sweater trunk at the foot of our bed but there’s nothing to steal in there except sweaters! We had a light on a timer in the bedroom, and they turned it off. They also closed the window behind them.  Then they went to the living room and took the playstation and tv. I guess they grabbed the package on the way out the front door, which as I mentioned already was left open. They also turned off the light left on a timer in the front room, but turned on the light in our sunroom, which was another clue something was wrong. I never leave on the light in that room.

I was stuck at home all day Thursday waiting for the cops to come and take fingerprints and such. I called the insurance company, the post office, and the cable company, and  the banks to alert them for the possibility of identity theft. I don’t think they took any paperwork, but it’s still better to be safe than sorry. Thursday night, the Crime Scene cops came and dusted for prints, etc. They didn’t find any prints (not even Hubby’s or my prints!), despite the large amount of black powder they smeared around my bedroom. They did reveal, however:

  • that the bedroom window’s screen had been torn off and the frame broken
  • that the bedroom window had been pried open at the top and bottom with a crowbar (score one for Dr. Addled: I KNEW I hadn’t left the window unlocked, like the first cop had suggested!)
  • that the’d broken the back door’s deadbolt when they tried to open it from the outside (i.e., by kicking the door). The deadbolt became stuck in the “locked” position, fortunately for me. I wonder how much more we would have lost if the thief had access to the back door instead of having to go out the front door?

I spent two nights at Emily’s before Hubby came home on Friday morning. We then spent the rest of the weekend trying to pick up the pieces and complete our inventory. Hubby’s mad and I’m just sad. Hubby wants to buy a handgun, and I’m not ready to go there yet. Regardless, as upset as Hubby and I are about our stuff, we’re just glad that there was minimal damage to the house, and that our cats are safe. The stuff is mostly replaceable; the items that can’t be replaced are heartbreaking to lose, but our safety and security are really all that matter in the long run.

My interview has been rescheduled for this week. The school was totally understanding and the search chair promised that nobody would hold this against me. I hope this is the case, and will post again once I’m back from the interview.

quick post before first interview departure

December 5, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Just a few notes before I take off in another couple of hours for interview #1 (at the small, liberal arts college I’m really excited about, even though I hadn’t been originally). I’m a little nervous but it’s not bad.

  • I’m still sick and coughing, and am keeping my fingers crossed that Dayquil will help tomorrow. I’d hate to cough through my talk, or blow my nose to the point that I get another nosebleed.
  • I’m still doing some last-minute preparations, tweaks on the job talk and such.
  • Unfortunately it’s snowing quite a bit today, and some of the nearby highways have been closed because of the weather. Most flights seem to be running on time or close to on-time, though.
  • I just learned that my next-door office neighbor has 9 interviews lined up, and will go on 7 of them before the holidays. I have 3, now that I’ve declined the invitation at crappy southern university (more about this later). 2 of these are still unscheduled, but will occur after the holidays.

Panic must not set in so close to my departure… it must, must not. Wish me luck, and I’ll post again soon!
